"I DON'T CRY, I ROCK CHANEL"

-(CHANEL, 2024)

Babyxsosa is one of those artists who's sound and aesthetic is made specifically for the girls that grew up on a very niche side of Tumblr and have since evolved their entire sense of taste from the influences of said niche. And you know exactly what I'm talking about. Hailing all the way from Richmond, VA (DMV BADDIES RISE!), Jasia Abrams AKA "Babyxsosa" first got her start in the music scene around 2018, though her initial claim to fame came in 2019-2020 when her breakout single, "EverywhereIgo" popped off on Tik Tok. This so happened to be when I personally caught wind of her. During the height of the pandemic, the single was practically inescapable when scrolling on the FYP. Later, her underrated classic, "Uberxl" featuring Poloperks would be the catalyst to hook me onto Babyxsosa as an official up and coming artist with an incredibly unique musicianship that couldn't be replicated. And to be truthful, I lived for every second of it! Her soft, baby-like voice (per the name) over such whimsical, yet melancholically dream-like beats and bumped up 808s would continue to be a prominent theme throughout the production of her music, extending to even her newer tracks that have a lingering elements of Electroclash, Hyper-Pop-esque touches. One music critic, Yousef Srour, recounted her specific sound and vocal range as sounding "dainty," "lush," with lyrics surrounding "feelings of desire and despair." And what better way to describe a Messy Girl than unapologetic expressiveness in her emotions through art?!

THE MESSY GIRL REPUTATION

"I WEAR MY HEART ON MY SLEEVE, NOT MY PROBLEM

BITCHES BE TALKIN' BOUT ME, I DON'T HURT AT ALL"

- (BABYONCE, 2024)

Babyxsosa and her music have ways of conjuring up a complexing, almost contradictory brew of feelings. In one song, you may hear the atmospheric ambience of pensiveness and yearning for something, or better yet someone who's no longer there. Like reminiscing on memories you often romanticize because the fine details are just too hazy or you're too unwilling to really remember the actualities of -- the rose-colored glasses effect. Falling for someone you weren't expecting to and, for once, letting your guard down, you allow your emotions to flood open unwaveringly with intensity. It isn't until the second things no longer work out and they're gone that you are now faced with this space of contemplation between sulking in the experience of what once was and what now remains. In another song, there's proof that feeling doesn't have to last forever. Babyxsosa is big on reminding her audience that she is capable of bringing herself happiness via her own luxury and leisure, that she will always root for herself whether you're for or against her. She emphasizes on refusing to stay trapped in relationships with anyone who puts on a fake front to her face but betrays her loyalty behind her back, platonic or romantic. There's relatability in dealing with the drama and solitude that may come with this specific attitude, nevermind expectations. Inherently, that's what completely ties Babyxsosa to the Messy Girl title --she makes no exceptions to change who she is just for the sake of maintaining relations. She's steadfast in her identity, only willing to move the goalpost for her self-evolvement. She may let you get close enough to catch a glimpse into her world, but keep you just as far away to preserve her own peace if you cause any problems. There's an air of mysteriousness surrounding Babyxsosa that can be perceived by those who want to make their way into her circle, and quite frankly that's exactly how she likes it. Why choose a life of having numerous acquaintances that are practically strangers in her business when she knows she doesn't need the approval of others and only willing to ensue trust within herself and of those who are actually worthy of it?

Experimentation in not only her sound, but Babyxsosa's aesthetic acts as a key component into her role as a Messy Girl. Why?!

THE MESSY GIRL LOOK

Despite what Babyxsosa lacks in words from the minimal interviews she's done, she completely makes up for in possession of her aesthetic. Her style is full on, high-end glam filtered through an Indie Sleaze, Avant-Garde lens -- always sleek, always shiny, just enough edge for her Messiness. She mixes nightclub silhouettes with bratty, princess-like hyperfeminine detailing; tiny sequined dresses, glossy tights, sharp Guiseppe heels, fur coats, her signature all black mono sunglasses, skintight body suits, mini-bikinis, and nightly lingerie she has no problem wearing during the day. Like, if the 2010s Instagram era a la Bad Girls Club had a baby with 2014 era Tumblr, you'd get Babyxsosa. Her looks effortlessly flip between a high-maintenance princess lounging in luxe and an off-duty model caught candidly at a 2am afterparty. One moment, she's sprawled on the floor in a dress that could mirror a disco ball, later slipped into a tub full of stringers and balloons as if Cobrasnake took the photo himself, the next she's wrapped in a huge fur coat overlooking the city from her upscale balcony like an it-girl from a forgotten era. Even her simplest of outfits look as though they're straight out of an editorial! Babyxsosa's entire aesthetic, intentional or not, is centered around playing with fantasy, practicality, and prestige. Whether she's living it up at the club, collaborating and customizing bags for MCM campaigns, in the booth recording a track, posing for her next magazine spread, or documenting adventures for Youtube, she's sure to be besotted by those around due to the larger-than-life star-girl qualities she possesses which shine through her appearance. Although Babyxsosa isn't loud -- she's for shit sure magnetic, and that's not by accident.

THE "PRINCESS OF SOUNDCLOUD":

WHY BABYXSOSA MATTERS TO MESSY GIRL MOVEMENT

Babyxsosa is a refreshing reminder that living in your own personal version of femininity, your own path of womanhood, doesn't have to be polished to be empowering. And it certainly doesn't have to look one particular way or another. Life is all about finding your identity and living in your truth, especially as a woman in society. Through doing what makes us happy, we inspire others to do the same and share our best attributes with each other for the enrichment of both our communities and self-fulfillment. The exchanged ideas and experiences that can come forth when we lean into this mindset are capable of taking us far. Unfortunately, there are endless people in the world who can't comprehend the notion of a woman who chooses to reclaim ownership of herself, not interested in accepting the proprieties that compromise us into a counterfeit role we don't want to participate in. In response, society often dismisses, ostracizes, and spew hateful rhetoric towards the now Messy Girl. Their own internal malice becomes extreme projection towards her but it is up to the Messy Girl to decide whether she will let it define who she is as a whole, dragging herself into the bottom of the barrel of self-hatred that society uphold themselves, or will she use that negativity as ambition to prevail, to float above the fray as she achieves all that she stands for and all that life has to offer for her.

"AIN'T COSTIN' ME NOW, GET PAID TO THINK NOW

I'M WRITIN MY DREAMS OUT, I'M RIDIN MY DREAM CAR... I'M LIVIN' MY DREAM, HOE, CHECKIN ON ME NOW"

- (CHECK 4 ME, 2024)

Songs like "DRAMA BABY / MALIBU," "Better Days," "Babyonce," and "Check 4 Me" refer us back into the reality that although a Messy Girl pertains to the philosophy of authenticity and the rejection of societal expectations for our own sake, we are still human with human emotions just like everyone else. In between our strive for authenticity, we still suffer from that same melancholy, heartbreak, disappointment turned to rage, bitterness, resentment turned then to passion and furthermore, mania. However, we allow ourselves to express them when necessary -- we don't allow them to fester within us where we would, again, be hiding who we are in that moment. Outlets for these sentiments are essential rituals to the Messy Girl so we don't reach that manic point of no return that we have recycled over and over. Babyxsosa's outlet is her art; her music and expressions in fashion have a way of speaking for itself, in a way that we can -- as previously stated -- garner inspiration, something we too as Messy Girls can connect to in reassurance that we're not the first to feel this way regardless of who we are, and we certainly won't be the last. It is imperative to acknowledge women like Babyxsosa who represent the epitome of the Messy Girl philosophy for these very reasons, not to mention those women throughout history who've guided us to celebrate our Messiness in the first place!
